Game publisher Zoo Entertainment said Wednesday its online indie community IndiePubGames.com will hold the new Independent Propeller Awards at South by Southwest next year, with $150,000 up for grabs.
Submissions for the competition are open now through February 18, 2011. Winners will be announced on March 13, 2011, with the awards will taking place at SXWS's ScreenBurn, the gaming segment of SXSW's Interactive Festival in Austin, TX. Finalists will be announced February 4.
The total $150,000 award pot includes $50,000 for the grand prize and $25,000 for each winner in the categories of art, technical achievement, audio and design. Zoo Entertainment will supply finalists with flight and accommodations to SXSW, where they will demo their games. Titles will also be eligible for a publishing deal with Zoo Publishing.
According to the contest's official website, “All games that are made in the spirit of indie game development are eligible. This means that the primary motivation behind the game’s development is creative expression, more than contractual obligation or monetary gain.”
In October, IndiePub concluded its most recent competition
that awarded $100,000 to indies behind Hitbox Team's DustForce
. Category winners in that competition included Alexander Bruce's Hazard: The Journey of Life
, Cockroach Inc.'s The Dream Machine
, Thomas Brush's Coma
, Bad Pilcrow's Vanessa Saint-Pierre Delacroix and Her Nightmare
and Tyrone Henrie's Catapult for Hire
