IGDA Director Della Rocca Stepping Down

The International Game Developers Association's executive director Jason Della Rocca is stepping down after nearly nine years to pursue a new game industry venture, as the Board Of Directors starts a search for a new leader.
The International Game Developers Association revealed that executive director Jason Della Rocca, who has headed the organization for nearly 9 years, will resign from his position at the end of March to pursue a new venture. Della Rocca plans to pursue a new venture that will require him to "strike out on [his] own and step away" from his role at the IGDA. He'll reveal more on his next project after GDC, he said on his personal blog -- "and no, I’m not starting a game development studio." He admitted that he has suffered some fatigue over his long service to the association, and that he's not sure he's the "right guy" to lead the IGDA anymore. "Given the maturation and evolution of the IGDA, I’m not sure if I’m actually the 'right guy' anymore," says Della Rocca. "While I believe that my particular skills and strengths suited the needs of the IGDA along the way, the org has grown to the point where different styles of leadership should probably be explored." Della Rocca will assist the Board of Directors as they search for his successor, and he will remain involved after his resignation date to facilitate the transition process. The IGDA Board will also appoint a task force to coordinate the search for Della Rocca's replacement. The IGDA is a non-profit membership organization designed to advance the careers and enhance the lives of game developers by connecting members with their peers, promoting professional development, and advocating issues that affect the developer community. During his tenure, Della Rocca helped grow the IGDA's membership from 500 to 15,000 members. He also oversaw the expansion of its network of chapters to over 70 worldwide locations and established a Studio Affiliation program with more than 120 engaged studios. He received an Ambassador Award at the 2008 Game Developers Choice Awards for his efforts in advocating issues such as quality of life, creative freedoms, workforce diversity, and credit standards in the industry. "I am humbled and honored to have been a steward of the IGDA's mission," says Della Rocca. "Each day was a race to keep up with the passion and energy of members and volunteers in their drive to advance games. I am forever grateful for the enriching experience, and look forward to assisting the Board on a smooth transition."
