Havok, the middleware developer best known for its physics middleware engine, has announced that it will expand its offerings to clients beyond mere software and support by branching out into game design and product integration consulting. Though a broader range is implied in these new services over the longer term, it seems likely that Havok will initially be assisting with physics and other technical-related design and integration it is known for. More games have been taking advantage of physics in gameplay since Half-Life 2's introduction of the Source engine; that game implemented physics in its gravity gun, while other Source games such as Dark Messiah of Might and Magic use it to deform the environment to the player's advantage. Havok has appointed a vice president of Services and Support to oversee the new service offerings: Andy Arnold, who counts over 20 years of experience in managing support organizations, has stepped into the role. "Game developers are faced with dramatically increasing costs and mounting pressures to hit deadlines," said Arnold. "Havok will help to address these issues by offering a comprehensive suite of services designed to help our customers mitigate these risks." "One of our primary goals at Havok is to be invaluable to our customers by understanding their pressing business issues and their demands of our products. We strive to achieve this by providing unparalleled levels of service and support which exceeds our customers’ expectations and evolves with their business needs," said Havok CEO David O’Meara. "These new service offerings are not readily available in the gaming industry. We’ve listened to our customers, and we’re looking forward to filling the gap and already have a number of key assignments."
