Guildhall, AIAS Initiates $20,000 in Game Education Scholarships

The Guildhall graduate school for game development at SMU and the AIAS have founded a new Academy Scholar program, which will provide two $10,000 scholarships to students studying interactive entertainment development.
The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) and The Guildhall (game-related master’s level school) at Southern Methodist University have announced a new Academy Scholar program, which will provide $20,000 in scholarship funds. Two scholars will be named, one for the Fall 2009 semester and one in Spring 2010, and each will receive $10,000 toward their education. The scholarship is designed to support the emerging, graduate level talent coming from SMU and moving into the interactive entertainment industry and will honor an outstanding applicant who exemplifies the AIAS’ spirit and commitment to advance the worldwide interactive entertainment community. “SMU and AIAS have a shared vision and responsibility to further the industry and support the next generation of game makers,” said Dr. Peter Raad, executive director and founder, The Guildhall at SMU in a press release. “Our mission has always been to produce future industry leaders and the very best game professionals. We are honored to have the AIAS as a partner in helping us fulfill this mission.” To be considered for the Academy Scholar, a combined panel of senior AIAS members and SMU review board evaluates each admission portfolio and assigns a number which is then averaged. The individuals with the highest rank order are invited to submit an essay for consideration to win the coveted scholarship. The AIAS is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and recognition of the interactive arts and is the same organization that create the D.I.C.E. Summit. The Academy’s mission is to promote and advance common interests in the worldwide interactive entertainment community; recognize outstanding achievements in the interactive arts and sciences; and conduct an annual awards show to enhance awareness of the interactive art form.
