Consumer website GameSpot has named its game of the year, from a list of ten nominees. The high quality of all the nominated titles once again illustrates just what a good year it has been for critically acclaimed titles, with the accompanying editorial from GameSpot suggesting the almost all of them were genuinely considered for the top spot. Despite the high quality of the competition, the award went to a perhaps unexpected victor, with the website’s editorial team naming Blizzard's PC MMO World of WarCraft as the overall winner of 'Game Of The Year'. Blizzard’s massively multiplayer online role-playing game has proven a huge commercial success, becoming the fastest selling PC MMO of all time. Whether any other websites, magazines or institutions will name it as the best of 2004 though, with so many other quality titles also released, remains to be seen. Nominees: Burnout 3 (Xbox/PS2 - Criterion/EA) The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (Xbox/PC - Starbreeze/Vivendi Universal) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2 - Rockstar North/Rockstar) Half-Life 2 (PC - Valve/Vivendi Universal) Halo 2 (Xbox - Bungie/Microsoft) Ninja Gaiden (Xbox - Team Ninja/Tecmo) Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GameCube - Intelligent Systems/Nintendo) Rome: Total War (PC - Creative Assembly/Activision) Unreal Tournament 2004 (PC - Epic/Atari) World of Warcraft (PC - Blizzard/Vivendi Universal)
