Almost half of all American gamers watched less television last year or plan to reduce their TV time this year, reported a Ziff Davis survey released last week. The trend of gamers—young men 18 to 34 years old, in particular—playing games instead of watching television has, to date, been strongly backed by more other, more informal surveys and a Nielsen Media finding. It has raised the question of value for advertisers seeking to utilize ad space within games, in lieu of television. The survey, called the Ziff Davis Digital Gaming in America survey, says 46 percent of gamers either have cut their total television viewing time (26 percent) or anticipate they will do so this year (20 percent).
