Today's main Gamasutra feature is an interview with Binu Philip, president of Texas-based developer Edge of Reality (Shark Tale, The Sims), as he illuminates the company's history, future, and how independent console game developers can thrive in a difficult market of developer consolidation. In the following excerpt, Philip explains what he sees as a trait of many developers that works to their detriment: "Anything truly worthwhile generally requires a lot of patience. It seems to me that most developers don't possess enough forethought - it's not programmed into their DNA to think very long-term. They're either thinking from project to project, or just very short term. Instead of doing what it takes to build real value over the long haul, I tend to notice that many developers think in terms of maximizing short-term money by selling their studio... Most developers, in my opinion, need to be more patient, and believe in themselves, as opposed to taking a short cut, and looking to sell a company after one or two games." You can now read the full Gamasutra feature on the subject, including Philip's views on the state of the biz for independent console game developers (no registration required, please feel free to link to this column from external websites).
