Gears of War and
Unreal Tournament developer Epic Games, along with
Painkiller studio People Can Fly, announced
Bulletstorm, a multiplatform first-person shooter published by EA and due in 2011.
Epic, which owns a majority stake in Poland's People Can Fly, said that the futuristic
Bulletstorm is in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Epic and People Can Fly announced a publishing and distribution partnership with EA Partners in 2008, but only now revealed the name of the project.
Epic Games president Dr. Michael Capps said in a statement, "
Bulletstorm is the kind of game we love to make because it's pure, unadulterated entertainment."
The premise of the game involves an "elite band of mercenaries" called Dead Echo. But after the game's two lead characters are betrayed by their commander, they are "exiled to the far reaches of the galaxy."
Enemies include "hordes of mutants and flesh eating gangs in an abandoned paradise," with players fighting these monster off with "over-the-top" combat and "outrageously large guns," according to a press statement about the game.
People Can Fly is developing
Bulletstorm using Epic's widely-used Unreal Engine 3 game engine.
"The first time we laid eyes on
Bulletstorm, we instantly knew this is going to be the next big hit from these two great studios," said David DeMartini, SVP and general manager of EA's third-party distribution arm, EA Partners.
Epic's other project appears to be
Gears of War 3, the announcement of which made a
brief appearance on Xbox Live, although Microsoft took down mention of the game soon after posting.
