A group of programming enthusiasts have released a program intended as a first step toward running the Linux operating system on the GameCube. The program, named “Linuxpreview”, causes the GameCube to draw an image of the penguin Linux logo. On the team’s home page the programmers suggest that a Linux-powered GameCube could be used as a server, multimedia terminal or desktop client computer. Although efforts to put Linux onto the PS2 have been officially endorsed by Sony, Microsoft have, for obvious reasons, been less keen on the concept. Nintendo officials have so far failed to comment on the project, but the company has traditionally looked unfavourably on any attempts to modify its software or hardware – no matter how benign.
