Emergent Game Technologies has announced the latest release of its Gamebryo middleware suite, with new features and upgrades including a redesigned Emergent Terrain System, a new Geometry System and enhanced support for its Floodgate stream processing engine. Emergent says the 2.5 release of Gamebryo "provides a solid development foundation with the flexibility to integrate a company’s proprietary tools" and "allows for rapid development from planning to completion" to allow developers to deliver more creative and polished titles. Upgraded features include its redesigned Geometry System, which has minimized runtime data conversions, compressed data representations for reduced bus bandwidth to GPU, support for multiple geometry streams that optimize data access patterns, GPU instancing, and more flexible geometry data sharing. Its previously highlighted Floodgate technology has been updated for improved automatic division of tasks to minimize DMA transfers on PlayStation 3 and to maximize data pre-fetching on Xbox 360, an extensible mesh modifier system for arbitrary parallel operations on geometry per frame, and increased performance on components running on multi-core architectures. Finally, its new Emergent Terrain System features WYSIWYG terrain sculpting and painting tools, object placement and lighting capabilities, with terrain meta-data, dynamic LOD, a built-in shader system, integration with SpeedTree, and cross-platform support for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Said Emergent CEO Geoffrey Selzer, “Gamebryo 2.5 is the foundation for a new generation of creativity in game and simulation development. The significant transformation of the Gamebryo core and our vibrant partner community has given birth to the industry’s most powerful and flexible game development environment. Nothing else allows developers to as easily and smoothly create in any genre on multiple platforms.”
