Representatives from Japanese chip manufacturer Elpida Memory Inc. have announced that the company is to supply DRAM chips for Sony’s next generation PlayStation console. The company revealed that rivals Toshiba and Samsung would also supply chips for the console. "Those three will be chosen as suppliers. The ratio between the three firms is a matter to be decided later," Elpida Chief Executive Yukio Sakamoto told Reuters in an interview. As the world’s fifth largest DRAM chip maker, Sakamoto also revealed that the company was in talks with Nintendo to supply DRAM chips for its new console, currently codenamed Revolution. Although Sony's next generation PlayStation has long been assumed to be in its final stages of pre-production this, and other recent news, suggests that the Revolution too is in a more advanced state than many will have assumed. Indeed, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has already hinted that he will be discussing the new hardware platform during his keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference next month.
