Eidos Transfers Lara Croft to Crystal Dynamics

In a trading update filed yesterday, U.K.-based Eidos revealed that future development on its flagship Tomb Raider franchise will transfer from Core Design, the originator of the Lara Croft character, to the U.S.-based Crystal Dynamics.
The decision comes just two weeks after Eidos announced Core Design managing director and Eidos development director Jeremy Heath-Smith was stepping down from his positions at Core and on the Eidos board following delivery of Core’s latest installment in the franchise, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, which has met with lukewarm consumer reception and is reportedly fraught with quality-control issues. In the statement, the company revealed that since Heath-Smith’s departure it “has been conducting a review of the Tomb Raider franchise and the studio operations of Core Design,” and “will now be evaluating the Core Design studio's ongoing direction and contribution as part of the Group's overall development capabilities.”
