Eidos Revenues Down 43 Percent, Looks To Existing Franchises For Relief

Eidos announced fiscal results for the three and six months ended September 30, 2001, reporting net revenue of 31 million pounds ($45.6 million) for the six month period -- a decrease of 43 pecent from last year.
For the quarter, Eidos reported a loss of 11 million pounds ($16.1 million), or a loss of 8.2 pence per share (12.1 cents). The company shipped six new titles for the six months up to September 30, all of which were for the PC or PSOne. The company predicted that the current period, in which Eidos is releasing its first next-generation console titles, would be stronger. Ian Livingstone, Eidos's Chairman, said that despite the success of Commandos 2: Men of Honor which launched in September, the title had not lived up to the company's high expectations. "Although more than 500,000 units of Commandos 2: Men of Honor were shipped on launch and the title entered the retail charts in the top five in all of our major markets, total sales of this title ... failed to achieve the levels originally anticipated for [the game]." The company said it plans to reduce its risks with upcoming titles by basing future games on existing franchises. Releases from Eidos for the remainder of our year include next-generation hardware versions of franchise titles such as Deus Ex, Who Wants to be a Millionaire? 2, Commandos 2: Men of Honor and Olympic Winter Games Salt Lake 2002.
