Austin, Texas-based independent developer Edge of Reality (Shark Tale
, Pitfall: the lost Expedition
) announced that it is working on a new self-funded next-generation console title called Cipher Complex
. The game is slated for release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2007.
Described as “an intense, cinematic military combat game”, Cipher Complex
marks Edge of Reality's first completely original IP following eight years of producing titles for various publishers, a subject tackled recently
in a Gamasutra-exclusive profile of the developer.
In Cipher Complex
, a recon satellite is mysteriously blasted from orbit, and when diplomatic requests for information are stonewalled, the US government is forced to call in an operative named John Cipher. Cipher is then charged with uncovering the truth by any means necessary from behind enemy lines.
“The evolution of action games has seemed to plateau, perhaps because of the emphasis on sequels,” said Binu Philip, president of Edge of Reality. “We are exploring and developing brand new styles of gameplay and methods of storytelling. The concept and mechanics of Cipher Complex
have been incubating in our mind for years, and with power of the next-gen consoles, we can finally make our dream project a reality.”
In addition, Edge of Reality confirmed that while it has a team devoted to working on this new internal project, the developer maintains a second team that will continue working on licenses and established franchises.
