Electronic Arts is set to close servers for a number of its games, removing the online component from titles like Godfather and Lord of the Rings: Conquest beginning in March. Consumer weblog Kotaku located a full list of the planned closures -- many are original Xbox titles, the service which Microsoft itself plans to close in April. But next-gen multiplatform titles like The Simpsons are also included. Other shut-downs are more limited, such as the closure of Mercenaries 2 servers affecting the PC version only, and the closure of Army of Two occurring only on the Asia PS3 version. The full list is as follows: March 16, 2010 Online Service Shutdown Def Jam for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Godfather for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Lord of the Rings: Conquest for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Mercenaries 2: World in Flames for PC Need for Speed: Carbon for PlayStation Portable Need for Speed: ProStreet for PlayStation Portable Simpsons for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 April 15, 2010 Online Service Shutdown Burnout 3: Takedown for PlayStation 2 Army of Two for PlayStation 3 (Asia only) Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for Xbox Burnout 3: Takedown for Xbox Madden NFL 09 for Xbox After a fiscal third quarter analysts called 'pretty abysmal', EA is especially focused on selecting only its most profitable avenues of business. The affected servers likely no longer have enough players to justify the cost of their continuing operation.
