Ultima X: Odyssey has become the fourth massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) to be cancelled in the last six months (alongside
Mythica,
True Fantasy Live Online and
Warhammer Online) and the third in the last two weeks.
Representatives from Electronic Arts claim the game has been cancelled so that the company can focus its resources on the existing
Ultima Online game. No redundancies are expected as a result of the move and the game’s producer, David “InQWis” Yee has stated that “it’s the right move for the future of all things
Ultima, including the community and the team.”
The MMORPG has become one of the most crowded genres around in the last few years, with the extreme costs involved in launching new titles, particularly in setting up servers and customer service operations, causing many companies to think twice about launching new titles, even after months or even years of development.
