Sony Computer Entertainment America has officially announced the 2008 release of Guerrilla Games's highly anticipated FPS Killzone 2
following its much-discussed 2005 video debut, which Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison says will define "a new benchmark of our industry."
Sony promises that the new title with set "a new standard for next-gen gaming" with lifelike character animations, detailed and destructible environments, realistic physics, and advanced levels of artificial intelligence all coming together to deliver intense warfare.
The game follows a storyline two years following the original Helghast assault on Vekta, with the ISA now "bringing the fight to the enemy's home world of Helghan."
Players will take the role of a battle-hardened veteran of the Legion special forces unit, and will leave for planet Helhgan on a special mission to capture Helghast leader, Emperor Visari.
Sony says alongside its "extensive" single player mode will be a "thrilling" multiplayer mode, though no further details were yet given, but Sony says Killzone 2
's visuals will be "unprecedented" with motion blur, internal lens reflections, and depth-based color grading that will let players experience gameplay that is sharp, detailed, and vibrant.
Said Harrison, "There have rightly been high expectations for Killzone 2
since we shared the vision for the title back in 2005. Guerrilla have worked hard to focus the power of PlayStation 3 to realize their true vision for the game. With incredible action, drama-fueled gameplay sequences, and a vast array of weapons and vehicles, Killzone 2
defines a new benchmark of our industry."
