Capcom’s chief financial officer Kazuhiko Abe has stated that he expects a second price cut for the PlayStation 3 before the end of the year, although it is unclear whether he was referring to the calendar year or Sony or Capcom’s financial year.
Although not as outright dismissive as Konami’s
Kazumi Kitaue's comments earlier in the week, Abe appeared unconvinced of the impact that the recently announced
$100 price cut would make to current PlayStation 3 sales.
Quoted in a
Reuters article he stated that “The number of PS2 users is still growing and a shift to the PS3 is on the back burner, adding “"The price has been cut once and it is likely to be cut again towards the end of the year. I expect the [PlayStation 3's] installed base to grow gradually."
Interviewed at the ongoing E3 expo, Abe also claimed that sales of
Resident Evil 4 for the Wii were likely to exceed targets of 420,000 units as the game continues to perform well in both Japan and the West.
Overall Capcom has maintained a relatively low presence at E3 this year, with no major new titles announced and a focus on more imminent titles such as
Devil May Cry 4,
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and
MotoGP 07. The exception to this has been a brief new trailer of
Resident Evil 5 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which has been proclaimed as one of the highlights of the show so far.
