Almost four weeks after the expo closed the winners of the 2004 E3 Game Critics awards have been announced. The awards are voted on by a group of thirty-five journalists from periodicals such as Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, CNN/Money, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, Business 2.0 and The Los Angeles Times.
Somewhat controversially though the awards have apparently been given to games and hardware according to their expected final quality, rather than how they appeared at the show – where the PSP was essentially unplayable and Halo 2
was showing only as a limited multiplayer demo.
Nevertheless the PSP won Best of Show and Best Peripheral/Hardware; Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat
won Best Original Game and Best Best Puzzle/Trivia/Parlor Game; Splinter Cell 3
won Best PC Game, Best Action/Adventure Game and Special Commendation for Graphics; while Halo 2
won Best Console Game, Best Action Game and Best Online Multiplayer Game.
