Educational software developer E-Line Media has introduced
Gamestar Mechanic, an interactive game-based learning platform that teaches students problem-solving skills and the basics of game design.
Developed in collaboration with the non-profit learning research organization Institute of Play, the browser-based Gamestar Mechanic platform also allows students to develop their own games and publish their creations online.
After playing sample games and learning key concepts in Gamestar Mechanic's Quests mode, students can proceed to the Player Workshop, a basic game creation tool that employs a drag-and-drop interface.
Players can then share their games in the Game Alley mode, and can play and review games created by their peers. The Game Alley section additionally features monthly game design competitions, and offers students the opportunity to create games for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and the
National STEM Video Game Challenge.
