Discreet announced today that more than 125,000 users have already downloaded the free gmax content creation tool from Discreet’s website. This tool, introduced at GDC last year, allows users to create content for games using the popular 3Dstudio MAX interface and workflows. All that game developers have to do in order to support gmax is to supply users with a “game pack” with their game CD. These game packs usually consist of a set of MAX plug-ins which, working together with gmax’s base code, customize the editing tools for the specific needs and formats of each game. Games such as Microsoft’s Flight Simulator 2002 Professional Edition and EA’s Command & Conquer: Renegade are only some of the games currently shipping with a gmax game pack, while others like Microsoft’s Dungeon Siege will be doing so later this year. “It’s clear that gamers delight in personalizing their game experiences by having access to virtually the same tools used by professional game developers”, said Paul Perreault, gmax Product Manager.
