DFC Intelligence Forecasts 60 Million Console Sales by 2005

Research firm DFC Intelligence today announced a report that estimates 60 million next-generation consoles will have been sold to consumers by 2005.
DFC also predicts total U.S. revenue for interactive entertainment will increase 50 percent from 2000 levels to $12 billion in 2003. The full report, "The U.S. Market for Video Games and Interactive Electronic Entertainment," forecasts for videogame hardware and software, PC games, and portable consoles out to 2005, including individual sales for the three major console platforms, Playstation 2, Gamecube, and Xbox, under three different scenarios, with most picking the Playstation 2 as the eventual winner in the console wars. While DFC Intelligence president David Cole believes "the Playstation 2 has the potential to be the best-selling game system ever," the report also acknowledges scenarios in which the Gamecube gains advantage because of its lower price and powerful software brands. The report does not forecast Microsoft's Xbox to be a market leader in any of its scenarios, but Cole went on to state that Xbox has a good chance to establish itself as a major player in the market.
