Publisher and developer Capcom announced a film adaptation for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition at its conference yesterday at the E3 Media & Business Summit. The company is working with distributor Warner Bros. for a possible worldwide release in 2011. According to Capcom, the third-person shooter, which has been released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC since debuting in December 2006, has sold over two-million copies, with the Xbox 360 version accounting for over half of that. Lost Planet’s movie script will be handled by David Hayter whose previous credits include the first X-Men movie. Spider-Man film producer Avi Arad will act as a producer for the movie adaptation alongside Ari Arad and Steven Paul. Production company Seaside Entertainment is already working on the movie, and Tetsu Fujimura from film consultancy firm Filosophia will serve as an executive producer through Seaside. Capcom hopes to strengthen its video game-to-movie development process with this continued synergy of movies with its video game brands. The company pointed to last year’s “revenue record-breaking release” of Resident Evil: Extinction and its upcoming 2009 films, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and Clock Tower as examples of its strategy to create more opportunities for profit and success by developing “one property with multiple uses.” The company also plans to release a movie version of Onimusha in 2011 and has a CG full-length feature, Resident Evil: Degeneration, already in production. In addition to film publishing, Capcom is actively pursuing opportunities to expand its franchises through mobile games and character goods.
