A new report by research firm NPD Canada shows that sales of video game software and hardware in Canada generated almost Canadian $373 million (US $283m) during the fourth quarter of 2003. This figure is up 12% from the same time in 2002 with December sales up 17% at Canadian $225 million (US $171m).
Hardware sales were up 19% during the fourth quarter with 753,000 consoles being sold in total. Of these the Game Boy Advance led with a 27.6% market share, followed by the PlayStation 2 at 27.4%, GameCube at 22.1% and Xbox at 20.9%.
Software sales rose 35% in the same period with the top publisher being Electronic Arts with a 23% market share, followed by Nintendo, Activision, Sony and Rockstar.
