Bungie Studios has released
an online FAQ offering insight into the upcoming
Halo 3 beta test for the Xbox 360, specifically indicating that “thousands” are expected to take part, and that players can expect “a few surprises.”
Unlike other beta tests, the
Halo 3 will not be rolled out in phases. Instead, all players from the first two invite only alpha tests will participate simultaneously with those taking part in the beta, a move that is expected to create a beta test community numbering the thousands.
In addition, the party system from within
Halo 2 will be featured in the beta, allowing players who only wish to play the game with friends will be able to do so.
In addition, according to Bungie, while the exact scope of the beta has yet to be finalized, “there are bound to be a few surprises in store for fans,” most notably the functionality behind the game's mysterious X button functionality, which has remained the source internet speculation and rumor. Other new features and weapons, such as as the Spartan Laser, are also expected to be found in the beta when it becomes available.
Bungie and Microsoft
previously announced that the initial shipment of
Crackdown, shipping February 20 for the Xbox 360, will include an invite to the multiplayer beta. The beta is expected to begin this spring, though no firm date has been announced.
According to Bungie, the beta will only last for a limited time, though again, no exact length has been specified. No firm release date is available for
Halo 3, with most analysts assuming a late 2007 launch.
