Sony’s next console, loosely dubbed PlayStation 3, will likely use Blu-ray Discs technology developed by the Blu-ray Disc Founders, news sources reported this week.
The Blu-ray Disc Founders is an organization comprising Sony, Panasonic, and 11 other electronics manufacturers, and its goal is to create a new, standardized format of next-generation optical disc with significantly more storage space than DVDs or format-war competitor HD-DVDs.
The group hopes to have in place all the specifications for a read-only version of the discs, called BD-ROM, by Sept. 30.
Sony affirmed that more details about the next-generation console game system will become available when the device debuts in Japan March 31, 2005.
