BioWare’s critically acclaimed
Mass Effect 2 will find its way to the PlayStation 3 in January 2011, breaking the franchise’s close ties with Microsoft platforms, Electronic Arts announced Monday at Gamescom.
The PS3 version of BioWare’s action-RPG will feature additional content not found in the standard Xbox 360 and PC versions, though EA has not announced whether the new content will be exclusive to the PS3 version.
The original
Mass Effect was published by Microsoft Game Studios, and was only released on Xbox 360 and PC. The game allowed players to import their character and specific choices into
Mass Effect 2, thereby altering several aspects of the game world.
Since the original
Mass Effect was not released on PS3, it is unclear how or if these features will be implemented in the PS3 version of
Mass Effect 2.
Mass Effect 2 was released on Xbox 360 and PC on January 26, 2010, and was lauded by fans and critics alike for its blend action based gameplay and complex role-playing mechanics, and is the highest rated game ever released by either BioWare or EA, according to Metacritic.com.
