In a somewhat surprising admission, Robert Bach, Microsoft senior vice president and head of the company’s Xbox division, has claimed that a PC is better suited to be the center of home entertainment than a games machine. According to Bach, “You need something that can manage much more than what a $200 or $300 device can be able to do.” His comments, which appear to undermine the original intended purpose of the Xbox, came in a Wall Street Journal feature concerning various companies' attempts -- including Sony, Apple and TiVo -- to avoid relying on Microsoft software. With the Xbox 2 rumored to be ditching its hard drive, this could be further evidence that Microsoft’s new strategy for the Xbox, after its failure to outsell the PS2 and GameCube, will rely on the PC to deliver ancillary functions (such as music file support) that the Xbox currently manages.
