ATI Technologies announced the Mobility Radeon 7500, the latest in a series of graphics processors for laptops which features on-board hardware transform and lighting capabilities. When it begins showing up in laptops towards the end of this year, ATI says the chip will be the first mobile graphics processor to support 128-bit double data rate (DDR) memory, and will deliver almost twice the performance of Nvidia's GeForce2 Go chip, which started shipping in laptops earlier this year. Other features of the chip:
  • HydraVision. This is ATI's multi-monitor management software that allows users to define up to nine multi-monitor configurations.
  • Charisma Engine. This is the chip's geometry engine, which supports full transformation, clipping and lighting at 40 million triangles/second, advanced vertex skinning and key frame interpolation.
  • Pixel Tapestry. A rendering engine that can process up to three textures concurrently in 32-bit color.
  • Video Immersion. This is ATI's on-chip motion compensation, iDCT and adaptive de-interlacing. The chip can decode and display MPEG-2 content in all HDTV formats, including 1280x720 pixels progressive and 1920x1080 pixels interlaced.
  • Hyper Z technology. Memory management which improves memory bandwidth by 20%, or up to 8.8GB/sec of effective memory bandwidth.
