Apple said this week that that the iPhone 3GS has sold 1 million units in its opening three days, a rapidly-achieved milestone that's likely heartening for iPhone game developers, as the platform continues to show signs of astounding viability. Apple said the 3GS reached the mark on Sunday, June 21, the third day after the launch of the new hardware, which has improved features such as a better camera, improved battery life, and faster performance. Apple head honcho Steve Jobs said that there are over 50,000 applications available on the App Store for download. As of March this year, there were over 6,000 games for iPhone and iPod Touch available on the service. Apple also said it would drop the price of the older iPhone 3G to $99. On June 17, the company launched its 3.0 iPhone software for all iPhone and iPod Touch devices, which includes the ability to take in-game microtransaction payments, among other notable features. Such a feature could prove to be a good fit for emerging business models, but the platform could provide a unique challenge for those wanting to implement microtransactions. Dozens of game companies have come on board with the iPhone and iPod Touch, from large publishers such as Konami, EA, and Ubisoft, to many independent developers such as Firemint, ngmoco, and Subatomic Studios.
