Intel rival AMD have today debuted their 64-bit Athlon 64 PC processor, which the company has designed to enable companies to use 64-bit application, while still supporting 32-bit software. It is unclear though which, if any, PC makers will be using the chip in upcoming products and it may be that the hardware will find greater initial success in Japan, where Intel’s grip on the market is least strong. Intel officials recently announced that the company’s 64-bit “Tanglewood” Itanium chip would not be unveiled until after 2005.
