AMD Announces Athlon 64 Processor

AMD today announced that its next desktop/mobile chip will be named "AMD Athlon 64", taking over for the current code name, "Clawhammer."
Based on a 64-bit, x86 architecture, the processor will be able to run 64-bit applications at full performance and simultaneously run 32-bit software applications with no performance penalty, according to AMD. It will include a number of technology improvements, like a HyperTransport bus and an integrated memory controller that will boost performance by directly connecting the processor to the memory and dramatically reducing memory latency. In a demonstration to an audience at COMDEX today, AMD's CEO Hector Ruiz demonstrated the processor by running Unreal Tournament. Systems featuring the Athlon 64 are planned to be available in late first quarter 2003 or early second quarter 2003.
