Activision’s CEO, Bobby Kotick, has stated that he does not expect the PlayStation Portable (PSP) to launch in North America until the second quarter of next year, which could mean a release date as late as June 2005. According to SCEA director of public relations Molly Smith, "We have not discussed or given any indication that an adjustment to the PSP launch window is on the horizon”. But this has not stopped wide speculation within the industry that a 2004 launch in Japan will not materialize. Kotick’s theory seems to be based on an assumed delay in the system’s Japanese launch, but according to Sony, the PSP is still on target to launch there this Christmas. The device was originall supposed to go on sale in the US at the time as Japan, but last February Sony pushed back the North American launch to the first quarter of 2005 - which has always been the stated release date in Europe.
