The 7-Eleven convenience store chain has partnered with publicly-traded company Game Trading Technologies to sell used games under $20 at over 3,000 7-Eleven locations, or about 50 percent of 7-Eleven's U.S. stores, Hunt Valley, MD-based GTT said Monday.
GTT said that the selected locations represent half of the total 7-Eleven stores in the U.S. GTT expects that most 7-Eleven stores that are part of the program are expected to begin carrying the used games this September.
"What this means to consumers is that they will have many convenient locations, most open 24/7, to buy value-priced video games," said GTT president and CEO Todd Hays. He said the program is open to all 7-Eleven U.S. franchisees.
GTT, which procures, refurbishes and redistributes pre-owned games, said that participating 7-Eleven stores will have a cardboard display that holds used games priced $19.99 and below for various platforms.
The pre-owned game company also has partnerships with retailers including GameStop, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, GameFly, Target, Toys ‘R’ Us, Blockbuster and others.
7-Eleven stores will only be selling used games, not buying any in or giving cash or credit for trade-ins. GTT will replenish used stock.
"More than 60 percent of U.S. households now have at least one video game console, and consumers are searching for convenient ways to stretch their entertainment dollar in this challenging economy," said Michael Jester, 7-Eleven category manager for gaming and electronics.
