LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE) have confirmed that the companies have now sold a total of more than 1 million retail units worldwide of
Star Wars Galaxies, its PC MMO that launched back in April 2003.
Although not revealing current active subscription numbers (MMO subscription ranking website MMOGChart.com currently estimates 255,000 active
Star Wars Galaxies subscribers, based on 'inside sources'), the companies are claiming notable recent growth to
Star Wars Galaxies subscription numbers.
This growth has apparently been fueled by recent game additions such as the
Rage of the Wookiees, as well as the connection of the game content to the recently released Star Wars: Episode III movie, which is continuing with a new expansion,
Trials of Obi-Wan, which will include more than 50 new quests, many on the shores of molten lava of the Episode III-featured planet Mustafar, scene of Anakin Skywalker's defeat.
Interestingly, it's also been revealed that many new quests also revolve around "a prominent figure from
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic", whose stated catchphrase "Eliminate all meatbags" implies that disagreeable droid HK-47, a particular favorite of
KOTOR players, and a character created specifically for that game, will be making an appearance in
Star Wars Galaxies - a good example of how the Star Wars canon is being expanded by non-filmic additions.
