Spider-Man 3’s Webbing Holds At Top Of UK Charts

The UK game charts have become a battle of the movie licenses, with the initial broadside from Pirates of the Caribbean failing to dislodge Spider-Man 3 from the top slot, while Nintendo’s Mario Strikers Charged records a strong debut
The top of the UK sales charts has become a battle of the movie licenses, with the initial broadside from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End failing to dislodge Activision’s Spider-Man 3 from the top slot. However, this week’s chart covers a period before the movie’s release, with subsequent weeks likely to see Disney’s title sail to the very top. The other new entry of the week is Nintendo’s Mario Strikers Charged Football (aka Mario Strikers Charged) at number three, with the company’s first online-enabled home console game in Europe off to a promising start, on the back of heavy point of sale and TV advertising. Nintendo is the only company to have any format exclusive titles in the top ten, with Wii Play at number six and Brain Training (aka Brain Age) at number seven. The latter is also the only other title in the top ten to move up the chart this week, as a result of renewed TV advertising. The highest new entry outside the top ten is Pony Friends on Nintendo DS at number eighteen – a Nintendogs-influenced pet simulator developed by Tantalus and published by Eidos. Meanwhile, Konami’s Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops on PSP has had a disappointing start at number thirty. The title’s success has not been helped by a delayed release date, first from the North American release and secondly from a last minute printing error that omitted the game’s age rating from the UMD. Other movement of note in the top forty includes a rise of ten places for both Ubisoft’s TMNT at number eleven and Electronic Arts’ The Sims 2: Pets at number twelve, with both family-friendly titles performing well during the school half term. New stock of the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II has seen that title re-enter the charts at number twenty-four, while Nintendogs: Dalmatian & Friends also re-enters at number thirty-five.
