Nintendo of America has announced that
Super Smash Bros. Brawl has become the fastest-selling video game in the company's history, selling more than 1.4 million units in the U.S., 874,000 of those on its March 9th release date alone.
According to Nintendo, this computes to a rate of more than 120 units per minute between its launch and March 16th. The title features dozens of classic Nintendo characters battling alongside other industry mascots like Sonic the Hedgehog and
Metal Gear's Solid Snake.
The title supports battle for up to four players either locally or online. Nintendo also notes that its predecessor,
Smash Bros. Melee, was the best-selling GameCube title of all time, selling over 7 million copies worldwide.
Nintendo of America EVP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway commented, "
Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon. Game reviewers and the public alike praise its fun game play and extensive, inventive content."
