The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have announced the winners of its first European Proggy Awards for animal-friendly achievements in 21st century culture and commerce across a variety categories, from cosmetics and foods, to movies and video games. Included among the numerous award winners was Nintendo's popular puppy simulator for the Nintendo DS, Nintendogs, which was named Best Animal-Friendly Video Game by PETA Europe in recognition of its animal-friendly achievements. The title, which lets owners train and care for lifelike puppies using the Nintendo DS system's touch screen and microphone, launched on the Nintendo DS on August 22, 2005 in North America and on October 7, 2005 in Europe, and a recent Nintendo earnings statement revealed global sales for the Nintendogs franchise at an impressive 6.65 million units. "Because dogs require a lifetime commitment of love, care and attention, getting a puppy on impulse or giving one as a gift can lead to disaster," commented PETA Europe's Lauren Bowey. "But thanks to thoughtful products like Nintendogs, children and adults who love dogs can play with their 'pups' any time they wish with a simple flick of a switch." Those interested in learning more about the other honorees can visit the official European Proggy Awards website for a full list of winners.
