New Super Mario Bros. Wii has become the first quadruple-selling game for Nintendo's Wii console in Japan, breaking the four million mark over the weekend. As of Sunday, November 28, the game sold 4,001,276 units in the region according to new sales figures released by Enterbrain (as reported by Andriasang). The game, a multiplayer reboot of the early Mario titles in the franchise, had sold 3.7 Million copies in the region by April earlier this year, following its debut in late 2009. The game's continued popularity may have been buoyed by Nintendo's recent high-profile celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of Mario Bros. on the Famicom, which have included the release of a limited-edition red Wii that comes bundled with the title around the world. In October this year, Nintendo said as of September 30, New Super Mario Bros. Wii shipped over 16.7 million units globally.
