2K Sports announced today that its latest basketball title,
NBA 2K11, has sold nearly 4 million units worldwide since its launch, and has become the fastest selling title in the history of the franchise and the 2K Sports publishing label.
While 2K Sports and Electronic Arts have historically fought for dominance in the NBA games space,
NBA 2K11 hit the market without a mainline EA Sports title as its rival, as Electronic Arts
chose to cancel NBA Elite 11 in November last year.
Since its launch in October 2010,
NBA 2K11 has remained the only up-to-date NBA title on the market, with EA's arcade-focused
NBA Jam the game's only console-based licensed competition.
In addition to the game's record sales, 2K Sports announced it has dropped the price of
NBA 2K11 across five platforms. The title is now available on Xbox 360, PlayStation3, and Wii for $39.99, and on PSP and Windows PC for $19.99.
“When we first landed Michael Jordan for the cover of
NBA 2K11, we knew we had to produce a title worthy enough for the greatest player of all time," said Greg Thomas, 2K Sports' president of product development.
"The number of accolades and sales milestone prove that we lived up to the challenge to create the greatest hoops game ever developed by 2K Sports."
