Monster Hunter Drives Capcom Q1 Profits Up 60 Percent

Japanese publisher and developer Capcom has announced details of the company’s first quarter financial results, with profits increasing by 60.1 percent to $37.2 million, thanks to the huge success of PSP title Monster Hunter Freedom 2G in Japan.
Officials from Japanese publisher and developer Capcom have announced details of the company’s first quarter financial results, for the three months ended June 30th. During this time the company saw profits increase by 60.1 percent to ¥4.02 billion ($37.2m). Sales during the period were up by 14.5 percent from the previous year to ¥16.35 billion ($151m), with Japanese-exclusive PSP title Monster Hunter Freedom 2G being the company’s most successful product of the period with approximately 2.4 million unit sales. As a result the game became the first PSP title to break the 2 million unit milestone in Japan. Sales for the company’s home and portable video game business alone increased by 31.5 percent to ¥10.41 billion ($96.3m), while operating income rose by 90.0 percent to ¥3.56 billion ($32.9m). According to Capcom software sales other than Monster Hunter Freedom 2G were “mainly small-scale titles including spin-off software and repeated sales of existing products”. Nevertheless they were described as having undergone “favourable growth in general.” As has been the case for several years, the company’s arcade business continued to struggle in what Capcom describes as a “severe business environment”. The division’s weak performance has caused the company to leave its forecast for the full year unchanged.
