Capcom's popular Monster Hunter series is continuing to enjoy its tradition of massive success in Japan, with the publisher saying its Monster Hunter Freedom Unite has sold over 3.5 million units in the region. The action RPG is the first PSP game to cross that milestone, Capcom claims. Unite was released in Japan under the title Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G in March 2008. Its releases in North America and Europe followed only last month, but the game has been supported by a heavier U.S. advertising campaign than the series has traditionally received, as Capcom presumably hopes to transform the franchise into a more broadly global hit. The "The Best" version of the game (akin to Greatest Hits in North America) launched in Japan in October, and has been responsible for 1 million of the total 3.5 million Japanese sales. Capitalizing on that success, the Monster Hunter Festa event will be held again this August, to "bring fans of the game together in celebration of all things Monster Hunter."
