Modern Warfare 2 Leads UK's Top Games Of 2009

Activision and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 didn't release until relatively late in 2009, but it still managed to become the year's top-selling game in the UK, according to UK-based industry watchers. The military shooter Modern Warfare 2 was the number one game on the UK's 2009 all-platforms chart, which lumps together sales of all versions of a given title, the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association and Chart-Track said Wednesday. The game, developed by Activision-owned Infinity Ward, released on November 10 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. ELSPA said the game grossed over £67 million ($109 million) in its first week of sales. Activision separately said today that Modern Warfare 2 surpassed $1 billion worldwide. Total Call of Duty franchise sales are over $3 billion globally. The title was able to outdo other top-selling games, including EA's FIFA 10, Nintendo's Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit, and Wii Fit Plus, and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed II, among others. ELSPA director general Michael Rawlinson said Modern Warfare 2 "firmly established videogames as one of the leading forms of entertainment in the UK." He added, "There is no doubt that 2009 belonged to Activision, but it was a strong year for many software developers and publishers. The rise of family-orientated, multiplayer games in 2009 also demonstrates how videogames have expanded into new genres finding fresh audiences. If nothing else, last year confirmed that we are now a nation of enthusiastic and energetic gamers here in Britain." 2009 UK All-Platforms Chart 1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 2. FIFA 10 3.
