Funcom has revealed The Secret World, its new modern-day MMO from director Ragnar Tørnquist (The Longest Journey, Dreamfall) coming to both Xbox 360/PC, promising 'action, horror and intriguing conspiracies.' As opposed to the majority of fantasy MMOs, The Secret World will be set on earth in modern times, and, says Funcom, is inspired by history, mythology, modern conspiracy theories, and ancient mysteries. Funcom says players will take part in "the greatest conspiracies of our age, and battle the forces of darkness across the world and throughout time," as they explore both the real world and the titular 'secret world' within it "where where magic exists, monsters roam and ancient forces are fighting for the dominance of earth." Though, Funcom says, the game is currently in a playable state having been in development since last summer, the company is not speculating on a release date, but instead points gamers to sites such as DarkDaysAreComing.com and darkdemonscrygaia.com a puzzle based site and web community offering clues about and concept art from the game's world. Said Dreamfall creator and The Secret World director and producer Ragnar Tørnquist, “We started envisioning this contemporary online world more than ten years ago, and as the years passed the ideas grew and improved. We always wanted a different kind of online world, something scary and contemporary, something deeper and closer to our reality. Our goal now is to create a detailed world where players feel empowered and part of something big, something mystical and epic.”
