Square Enix’s Nintendo DS release Dragon Quest V was the company’s top-selling game for the year, and the only one to sell over one million units, the Tokyo publisher said this week. Sales of the game -- a remake of the original Super Famicom title -- hit 1.35 million units during Square Enix’s fiscal year, which ended March 31 2009. Dragon Quest V for DS released in Japan in July 2008, and in North America and Europe in February this year. Other notable sellers during Square Enix’s fiscal year, were Dissidia (PSP, 930,000), Crisis Core (PSP, 840,000), Chrono Trigger (DS, 790,000) and The Last Remnant (580,000), according to information on a presentation slide posted by consumer weblog Kotaku. The numbers account only for sales during the most recent full fiscal year. Square Enix also reported a drop in both sales and profits for the year ended March 31, 2009. Sales were down 8 percent to ¥135.69 billion ($1.44 billion), while net income was down 31.1 percent to ¥6.33 billion ($67.21 million). Operating income was down 42.9 percent to ¥12.27 billion ($130.26 million). But the company forecast full-year net income to grow 136.8 percent to ¥15 billion ($159.24 million) for the year ending March 31, 2010, reflecting the release of the highly-anticipated Final Fantasy XIII. The publisher forecast net sales for the current fiscal year to rise 32.7 percent to ¥180 billion ($1.9 billion). Operating income is expected to rise 103.6 percent to ¥25 billion ($265.39 million). Just following the end of the fiscal year, Square Enix recently completed the acquisition of U.K.-based Eidos, home of the Tomb Raider franchise.
