Battlefield Heroes, DICE's first-person shooter attempt at the online free-to-play market, has garnered one million users, with that figure growing by "tens of thousands" daily, publisher Electronic Arts said today. The PC game is one of two separate but concurrent attempts to broaden the audience of Stockholm-based DICE's popular and influential Battlefield series of team-based multiplayer shooters. The other is Battlefield 1943, currently available on Xbox 360 and PS3 and due on PC in September. Both games are download-only, although their business models are diametrically opposed: 1943 is sold as a standard one-time purchase, while Heroes derives revenue entirely through advertising and in-game item sales. After launching in June, Heroes now exceeds one million users. "The team is really proud to have hit one million registrations at this early stage," said team general manager Ben Cousins. "Creating a character and gameplay experience that is totally yours is what sets this game apart."
