Mobile dev Boomlagoon acquired by Wargaming as Wargaming Helsinki

Wargaming says the acquisition of the Finnish mobile studio is part of the company’s recent focus on strengthening its mobile game development efforts.

The Finnish mobile developer Boomlagoon has been acquired by Wargaming and renamed Wargaming Helsinki as part of the company’s efforts to strengthen its presence in the mobile games market.

The acquisition is somewhat of a reentrance to mobile game development for Wargaming after the company’s recent closure of WG Cells, the Seattle-based mobile developer it acquired last year.

This recent acquisition is in line with a statement made by Wargaming following the WG Cells closure that said the company wanted to “consolidate its efforts in other geographies and around other in-house teams which operate closer to or in the key growing mobile markets.”

Boomlagoon was first founded in 2012 by former Rovio developers and has since picked up talent from Digital Chocolate, Housemarque, and Remedy.

Early on, the studio benefitted from the growing Finnish mobile game market and went on to release the games Monsu, Spirit Hunter and Super Soldiers. As Wargaming Helsinki, the studio will work on creating both new experiences and established Wargaming titles.
