Sun Microsystems has announced an initiative among game developers and technology companies.
The participants will collaborate on establishing an open, industry-standard Java APIs to for portable networked applications. The aim of the initiative is to help streamline and simplify developing and deploying games across multiple devices. These APIs will then evolve through the Java Community Process program (JCP). Participating companies include Blam!, Friendly Giants, Games.com, GameSpy Industries, Liquid Edge Games, MathEngine, Plazmic, Sega.com, Shiny Thing, Bit Studios, Tao Systems, and Sony Online Entertainment. Sun also announced the launch of Javagaming.org, a community site geared towards assisting the development and implementation of games using Java technology. Javagaming.org will provide a forum for users to both share information related to using Java technology in games, and also find up-to-date information about resources for Java-based game development.
