Non-profit group Entertainment Consumers Association has announced the hiring of former ESA attorney Jennifer Mercurio as the head of its Government Affairs office to direct its government relations and advocacy efforts. In a release, Mercurio is quoted as saying the time could be here for a "paradigm shift" in consumer advocacy and representation. "The digital advocacy component and the development of an extensive network of grassroots chapters really represent such an important evolution for consumers and the interactive entertainment industry as a whole. I'm keen to find out just how influential we can be," she said. Her hiring follows the previously reported promotion of a number of marketing officials, and the addition of Smart Bomb co-author Aaron Ruby to head a new yet-unannounced ECA website in the fall. Said ECA president Hal Halpin, "We're so pleased to welcome Jenn aboard. We worked together in the past when I ran the IEMA and she was one of two big guns leading the charge for the ESA's state-level legislative affairs, and I couldn't have been more impressed. Her track record in successfully lobbying against anti-games legislation, and being a part of the team that overturned the few bills that passed, speaks for itself."
