Splatter House a game that originally came out for Sega and gave me
nightmares of a digital Jason from Friday the 13th. Apparently it comes
back to haunt me yet again with a revamp installment with no doubt more
gorey gfx is gorey even a word?
What I know about the game, which is little is the player can’t find his girl. Why he doesn’t text her call her friends parents or even the cops we may never know. But we do know he finds a mask the apparently gives him freaky powers and a strong desire to poke things (like most teen males) to death. The game defiantly pays homage to the style of its yester-years with platforming puzzle solving and most likely button mashing followed by or coupled with foul language.
But a revamp is after all a revamp and in this department Namco aimed for the bleachers. The gfx are of course upgraded, but they decided they needed more realism in their game of murdering sprees so even the gore has its own physics driving it to bounce turn tumble and ungulate across your screen as you dismember some poor bastard or thing. Oh and the tools of dismemberment are plenty from 2×4s to chainsaws on down to the good fashion right arm of the last guy you took apart, hell even the environment can be used to further your gore driven rampage. And much like Jason in Jason vs Freddy you will be able to take copious amounts of damage and live to tell the tale, in a very unique way. Remember where damage models for the cars in racing games was all the rage? Well in Splatterhouse for your visual delight, you will see the damage suffered in the form of cuts, gashes, and other gaping wounds that heal via real time regeneration, so you get to see all the flesh and bones knit and reset itself for that added grossness. Some how though Namco also remembers that a few of us were there for the first ride, so although its a new story many of the enemies should seem familiar as they have evolved rather than changed.
What did change, was the story sorta. True to its roots the Splatterhouse plot involves some kidnapped chick and a desperate weak boyfriend now toss in 1 Terror Mask and an antagonist that can command and army of “corrupted” (the name of the enemies) you don’t have to be a genius to figure where it all leads. The game takes place in the antagonist’s mansion but also various locations as the corrupted seem to be popping up all over the world which are accessible through portals in the mansion which gives an awkward Mario 64 vibe. Which is completely different from the original where the player’s experience was pretty much limited to the mansion and its naughty bits.
The game is set to start its rampage this Halloween. Oh did I mention Namco is doing some major fan service, they are adding the original game as an unlockable but also has a kickass pair of shoes that match the game and sports the logo. Needless to say I’m looking forward to this one.
